When Paul writes his second letter to the church in Corinth, he is glad that they have turned away from their “unworthy actions”. Paul had spoken clearly and firmly to the church, which had created some tension in their relationship. He comforts them by reminding them that the Lord forgives their shortcomings, and emphasizes that, as the body of Christ, they all share in suffering. But he also comforts them with the truth that, in the midst of suffering, abundant comfort comes from God our Father in Heaven.
In times of trouble, we stand together, but our hope is in God. This is also Paul’s message in this passage: when things were at their darkest, he had no other choice but to trust in the Lord. Only the Lord could save him from certain death.
God Has Given His Yes!
It is in this context that Paul wrote the well-known verse declaring that all of God’s promises have received their “Yes.” For in God there is no “yes” and “no,” because what He has committed Himself to, He remains faithful to. Our assurance of this is the guarantee the Lord has given us through the Holy Spirit.
So, when we turn away from our sins and seek the Lord through His Word in the midst of our troubles, we already know the answer. For He has given us His promise through the Holy Spirit that the answer is Yes! Therefore, we can also confidently say Amen to all His promises. Not because we have received our own “yes,” but to honor God for all the blessings with which He has blessed us with, and for the hope He has given us, that we will see each other again.
Yes and amen!
